Good health is one of the biggest concerns that parents face when it comes to their toddlers. Toddlers are prone to accidents and infections as they are in their growing phase. As a parent you need to take care of their health. Proper training and inculcating the habit of maintaining good oral hygiene can be beneficial for them when they are young.
A very common oral problem in toddlers is tooth discoloration. In general, an off white or ivory colored primitive tooth is normal in toddlers. However, toddler tooth discoloration could be caused due to other factors as well. Early preventive care can help prevent cavities and ensure that your child does not have to undergo painful dental procedures in the future.
Some of the common causes that are responsible for tooth discoloration in toddlers are:
• Poor oral hygiene: One of the main causes for tooth discoloration is lack of proper oral hygiene. Not brushing your teeth properly allows bacteria to grow and results in the formation of plaque on the teeth which can develop into a stain.
• Exposure to certain vitamins: Toddlers are often given multivitamin supplements that contain iron, which is the main culprit for tooth discoloration. Tooth discoloration due to iron can persist for some time.
• Exposure to germs: Exposure to bacteria such as gingivitis can also cause tooth discoloration in your toddler.
• Eating certain foods: Foods such as sweet drinks and chocolates contain artificial color and sweeteners which are bad for your toddler’s teeth. Most aerated beverages are highly acidic and can stain your toddler’s teeth.
• Early tooth decay: some toddlers who suffer from chronic illness and frequent fever need to take continuous medication which may cause tooth discoloration. Tooth enamel is especially sensitive to disturbances such as illness, traumatic injury, and medication during the growing phase and can develop plaque inside the tooth.
In some conditions such as tooth discoloration due to iron or medications, proper dental treatment is a must. However, in most of the cases, prevention goes a long way in helping to avoid tooth discoloration. Proper training by the parents can help to inculcate the good habit of maintaining oral hygiene in toddlers.
There are several ways to avoid tooth discoloration in toddlers. Teach your toddler to brush his/her teeth twice a day. Minor stains can be removed it with a solution of baking soda and water. Use toothpaste that is medically certified by a dental association. Avoid fluoride rich toothpaste. Allow your toddler to pick his/her own toothbrush. Explain the importance of cleaning tooth. Teach your toddler proper brushing techniques and praise him/her when he/she gets it right. In case of tooth decay, immediately visit your dentist.
