Pregnancy Symptoms Week 1

Pregnancy symptoms differ from pregnancy to pregnancy and also from woman to woman. Some women experience many symptoms from the first week itself, others only after 5 weeks or so. Some women instinctively know that they are pregnant and recognize the signs while others may not associate them with pregnancy at all. Most first week pregnancy symptoms resemble pre menstrual syndrome.  The most common 1st week pregnancy symptoms are outlined below.

Missed period: This is generally the number one sign of pregnancy. A home pregnancy test or blood test will confirm if you are pregnant. A missed period could also be due to stress, weight gain or loss, illness or birth control medication.

Implantation bleeding: Some women experience spotting during the time their period is expected. This could be a confusing sign as the woman might think she is not pregnant. The bleeding in this case is light pink or brown in color and occurs when the egg is fertilized and implanted in the uterus. The bleeding is not harmful unless accompanied by cramps or a backache.

Swollen/tender breasts: This symptom may begin as early as 1-2 weeks after conception. The entire breast will feel sore, tender and tingly. The nipples will grow bigger and darken.

Darkening of areolas: The areolas will start darkening which is another sign of early pregnancy.

Fatigue: You may find you are exhausted all the time and simple chores tire you out. You may feel like you can never get enough sleep.

Morning sickness/Nausea: This could be only in the morning or throughout the day. You may feel sick at the sight of certain foods. Some women experience nausea throughout the 9 months of pregnancy.

Aversion /craving for foods:  You may even develop an aversion to foods you liked before or start craving foods you have never liked.

Headaches: This is another early pregnancy symptom. The sudden rise of hormones in the body causes headaches.

Frequent urination: This could occur more during the night. Due to a high blood flow during pregnancy, the fluid processing processes in the kidneys increase at this time.

Backaches: Lower backaches usually start in early pregnancy and some women experience a dull backache throughout their pregnancy.

Loose stools: This is another sign of early pregnancy which many women experience.

The above symptoms are due to the increased levels of progesterone, hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) and estrogen during pregnancy. The first week pregnancy symptoms will more likely be physical than emotional in nature.
