  • Rub your child’s chest with some balm or ointment and then cover him properly with a thick blanket.
  • Make sure that your toddler is well hydrated by giving him ample fruit juices and water that work as an expectorant and loosen hard and dry cough. It also helps expel the phlegm.
  • Toddler cough at night is also sometimes due to an allergy. Check with your health care provider before treating him with an antihistamine.
  • If your toddler has a dry cough at night and he is more than 12 months old, give him some honey for instant relief. You can also add a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice to one teaspoon of honey. Add this mixture to a little bit of drinking water and give it immediately to your toddler to drink. Do this for about two to three times during the day for quick relief if your toddler has a dry cough at night.
  • Sometimes dry air causes congestion in the toddler’s nasal passages. So make sure your child’s bedroom is equipped with a humidifier.
  • Rub some vapor rub on the soles of your child’s feet and cover them with socks. This may help alleviate his/her cough.
  • Massage some lukewarm mustard oil on your child’s chest. This will prevent the phlegm from becoming thick and also help keep it moist.
  • Herbal teas are also quite effective at clearing mucus from your toddler’s lungs. It is important that you check with your doctor as to what age you can give him/her herbal teas.
  • If the toddler cough at night is persistent and does not go away despite the many home remedies that you have tried, it is best that you consult your doctor.
