- Trail mix: This is a snack made from a variety of nuts, dried fruits and cereal. Trail mix can be made using foods like raisins, dried cherries, currants, peanuts, cashews, almonds, peanuts, pistachios, walnuts, multigrain cereal, sunflower seeds, mini pretzels and at times bits of chocolate too. These foods are ideal for women who are expecting twins as they are loaded with protein, Vitamin E selenium, iron, phosphorus and magnesium.
- Yogurt: This dairy product is very high in calcium, which makes it vital for the development of the baby's bones as well as the skeletal structure. Yogurt is also a good source of protein. The nutritious value of yogurt can be further enhanced by adding pieces of fresh fruit, nuts or granola to it. However, certain varieties of yogurt are also high in fat and sugar and they should be avoided.
- Spinach: While most vegetables are an important part of any pregnancy diet, spinach is very important for twin pregnancies. Apart from iron, spinach is loaded with folic acid, calcium and Vitamin K. Raw spinach should be avoided during pregnancy and therefore, it is best to prepare cooked dishes, made out of spinach.
- Liquids: Drinking at least 10 to 12 glasses of fresh water a day is very important to keep your body well hydrated. Moreover, you can get your daily requirement of fruit or vegetables, by drinking fruit juices or even vegetable juices. Soups are also great for adding more vegetables to your diet.
- Chicken: This is an excellent source of protein and is believed to be relatively safe, as compared to other meats. However, eating processed chicken meat, in the form of deli meats do not have the same effects and should be avoided in pregnancy.
Other factors like eating five to six meals each day are also important in twin pregnancies. It is best to consult with a doctor and get a pregnancy diet for twins that has been customized to suit your needs.
