Every expectant mother keeps a close eye on the changes occurring in her body throughout her pregnancy and makes every effort to find out if the changes experienced are normal or if they need to be brought to the immediate attention of her medical practitioner. One such matter is the change in the consistency, texture as well as quantity of vaginal discharge during pregnancy. Since the vagina is so closely associated with pregnancy, even a slight change in vaginal discharge could trigger concern revolving around the well being of the baby.

During pregnancy, there is a sudden increase in hormone production in the body. These hormones trigger most of the changes experienced by a pregnant woman. White discharge during pregnancy is absolutely normal and occurs because of the increased hormone production, especially estrogen.


This is known as leucorrhea and is a mixture of dead cervical and vaginal wall cells, mucus as well as natural flora from this region. The discharge is generally odorless or may carry a mild odor. It keeps the vagina moist and lubricated. Being acidic in nature, it also helps to keep infection at bay. An increase in white discharge during pregnancy in first trimester and white discharge during pregnancy, second trimester could also be due to an increase in blood flow to the pelvic region. White discharge during pregnancy, in the third trimester is known to increase as the body prepares for childbirth. Sticky white discharge during the last leg of pregnancy could be due to the expulsion of the protective mucus plug. Watery white discharge during pregnancy, especially towards the end of the pregnancy term could signal a ruptured amniotic sac. When the tear is really small, the trickling fluid could be mistaken for a heavy vaginal discharge. If the flow is clear and continuous, it is most likely to be caused by the breaking of the water bag. White clumpy discharge during pregnancy should not be ignored, especially if it is accompanied by a foul odor, itchiness or a burning sensation as it could be indicative of an infection.

The best way of dealing with excess vaginal discharge is by maintaining good personal hygiene. It is important that warm water, a gentle cleanser be used and frequent changing of undergarments is recommended. The use of highly scented harsh products must be avoided as they could result in rash or infection. The use of synthetic fabric panties as well as tight- fitting garments should also be avoided. Panty liners are recommended as they help in minimizing the discomfort caused by wetness in the vaginal area.
