A white mucus discharge during pregnancy is quite normal and is experienced by all pregnant women. Do not be alarmed if you notice more than the usual amount of white discharge during pregnancy. This white discharge during pregnancy is just normal leucorrhea which you might have noticed even before you got pregnant. The mucus discharge is a mixture of old vaginal cells, cervical secretions, natural bacterial flora that is present in the vaginal area as well as vaginal secretions. The amount increases during pregnancy as there is a greater amount of blood supply to the vagina and an increase in estrogen production as well.

Thick white mucus discharge in early pregnancy is quite common and occurs due to the changes in cervical mucus. Remember that white mucus discharge during pregnancy is nothing to be alarmed about. The white mucous discharge in pregnancy is not clear and watery but has a slightly thick consistency – like that of a lotion.


Do keep in mind however, that while a white mucus discharge during pregnancy is normal, you should contact your medical practitioner right away if you notice any changes in the discharge. For instance, if the discharge is foul smelling or has the consistency of cottage cheese, or is creamy yellow in color. All these changes in the discharge could be due to an infection and medical attention should be sought immediately. Also remember that any itching, burning or irritation could be due to a yeast infection at this time. If the discharge becomes grey or greenish yellow in appearance, it could be due to a sexually transmitted disease.

The white mucus discharge during early pregnancy will change as the pregnancy progresses. The white mucus discharge during the third trimester will be very different and towards the end of the pregnancy you will most probably notice, blood in the discharge. This white mucus accompanied by bleeding during pregnancy could be due to the mucus plug being discharged. Bear in mind that at the beginning of the pregnancy, the cervical mucus forms a plug at the mouth of the cervix to guard the baby and the uterus against infection. A clear mucus discharge during pregnancy, especially towards the end of the pregnancy is a sign that the body is getting ready for childbirth. If however, you notice watery discharge before 37 weeks of pregnancy, it is not normal as it is a leakage of amniotic fluid. Call your doctor immediately if you this happens.
