Baby Feeding tips
The first and most important thing to understand about formula feeding an infant is that it is not the optimal method that is advised by doctors of feeding a child. Formula feeding is therefore something that should be done only when there the alternative of breastfeeding a child is not an option. The only circumstances in which this should be practiced is when the mother carries some kind of infection like HIV or tuberculosis that can be passed on to an infant. In other situations, it is always advisable for both mother and child that breastfeeding is practiced. The most crucial reason for this is that human milk from a mother contains antibodies that are crucial for the infant’s immune system. These are proteins with receptors that act like databases of pathogen proteins and help the immune system to identify pathogens. Indirectly, this means that a mother is passing on her immune strength to a child by breastfeeding.
In the event that breastfeeding is not an option, it would seem a natural option to go for cow’s milk but this would be the wrong move. Cow’s milk is specifically made for a calf and this means that there some differences in the protein and carbohydrate compositions in cow’s milk. Whey and casein concentrations are some of the biggest issues involved in directly feeding cow’s milk to an infant, which will cause diarrhea. The best alternative is to therefore use a formula only. Most baby formulas are skimmed and powdered milk. This milk has also been cleared out of all the bacteria that could be part of the formulation. In addition to this, most baby formulations also contain added substances like omega 3 fatty acids, linoleic acid, and vitamins. This ensures that the growing child gets all the nutrition that it needs. Lactose, the main sugar in cow’s milk, is sometimes substituted with glucose and other simpler sugars.
One of the most important developments that have take place in the development of baby formula is the addition of lysozyme and lactoferrin. Lysozyme is a naturally produced enzyme of the human body and is present in breast milk. This enzyme can destroy the cell walls of bacteria and is crucial to the immune system. Lactoferrin is also a part of the human immune system and functions in much the same way but it is more wide spectrum and has some effectiveness against viruses and fungi as well.
