How to get rid of Stretch Marks After pregnancy?

(October 14, 2011)

Stretch marks typically appear after rapid weight gain or loss. Pregnancy is one of the most common causes of stretch marks. Exactly what causes stretch marks is still unknown, but there is definitely a genetic factor involved. Getting rid of stretch marks after pregnancy can be quite challenging. Early treatment has the best chance of success. Prevention is a much better option. Pregnant mothers need to keep their skin moisturized at all times. Apply a moisturizing cream at least four to six times a day. Well hydrated skin is a lot more pliant and can therefore stretch easily.

The effectiveness of treatment for stretch marks after pregnancy can vary, depending on the color of the stretch marks. Some are light in color and can be easily treated. Some can be pink, red or purple and can be very lumpy. These are more difficult to repair. Be aware of this fact before spending a fortune on an OTC cream.

Some home remedies for stretch marks after pregnancy involve the use of different types of oils. Rubbing the stomach, hips and breast with different oils helps to moisturize the skin and improve blood circulation. Some of the oils that can be used are olive oil, calendula oil, wheat germ oil, castor oil and almond oil. One of the more effective home remedies involves applying a mixture of almond, chamomile and lavender oil to the affected areas. Vitamin C, glycolic acid and retinoid based creams can also be used either singly or in combination. Most of these treatments are effective in dealing with stretch marks only during the early stages.

Some other ways to get rid of stretch marks after pregnancy involve laser treatments and dermabrasion. You should only consider these treatments if the usual OTC treatments have not been effective. Dermabrasion involves the removal of several layers of skin, allowing it to regenerate naturally. Healing usually takes place within 7 – 10 days. However, there may be certain side effects to this treatment, like a change in skin color or scar formation. Laser treatment is considered the most effective in dealing with even the most stubborn stretch marks.  This form of treatment can reduce the visibility to quite a great extent. Usually six to eight treatment sessions are required. This is however extremely expensive.
