Post partum anemia, which can be described as anemia after pregnancy, is a very common problem that is seen in several new mothers. This condition is usually diagnose soon after the baby is born, or during one of the post partum visits to the doctor. Unfortunately, there are many women who do not even realize that they are suffering from anemia after pregnancy as they tend to put the symptoms down to normal tiredness and exhaustion. However, it is important for all women to read the signs of anemia after pregnancy accurately, understand its possible causes and then take the required steps to cure the problem.

Anemia after pregnancy symptoms

The most common symptom of anemia after pregnancy is fatigue. While it is natural for all new mothers to feel tired quite quickly, this is much worse in women who are anemic. Hence, in case the tiredness affects a woman’s ability to perform her day to day tasks, or if the exhaustion continues after the baby is six weeks old it is probably one of the signs of anemia after pregnancy. Women also tend to look a bit pale when they suffer from anemia. However, in cases of mild anemia after pregnancy, most of the signs and symptoms go unnoticed.

Anemia after pregnancy causes

There are two main factors that could lead to anemia after pregnancy in a woman. The first one is suffering from anemia during the third trimester of pregnancy and the second factor includes excessive loss of blood, during delivery. Hence, in case a woman has anemia during pregnancy, or experiences severe loss of blood, the doctor needs to check her hemoglobin levels just to determine if she is likely to suffer from anemia. In case the risks of anemia after pregnancy are high, the medical health care provider may be able to suggest certain supplements, injections and other forms of treatment, to prevent it.

Anemia after pregnancy treatment

Apart from taking iron supplements, most women are advised to include high sources of iron in their diets, to increase levels of hemoglobin. Hence, foods such as beef, potatoes, clams, asparagus, turkey, beans and oysters should be eaten in higher quantities. There are also many foods that increase the absorption of iron in the body, such as oranges, strawberries and grapefruit. However, milk interferes with the absorption of iron by the body and therefore, should not be taken along with iron supplements or iron rich foods.
