You may also notice that on some days, your toddler coughs all the time, but on others, he or she may have a coughing fit during a certain time of the day (or night), like when brushing teeth, going to bed or while drinking something. When this happens, it is important for you to keep a track of the general trend and then check with the child’s doctor, to determine what the possible causes may be. Some causes may be absolutely harmless, whereas others may not. For example, in case you notice that your toddler coughs when eating or soon after a meal, it may be an indication of Acid Reflux, more commonly referred to as Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD). In case your toddler coughs in the morning immediately after waking up, you may want to make sure that your child is not exposed to smoke, as this is one of the first signs of excessive smoke exposure. If your toddler coughs after running, it may be an indication of asthma and therefore this needs to be checked and investigated without any delay.
It is possible for your toddler to cough throughout the day for several reasons and not all of them are a cause for concern. Therefore, if your toddler coughs all the times, it is best to consult a doctor, if the cough lasts for more than 10 days or if the cough is accompanied by fever and chills. In case you notice that your toddler coughs when lying down only, it is advisable for you to visit a health care provider as soon as possible, as this could be an indication of a more serious underlying condition, such as sinusitis, bronchitis, or croup.
