Ultra sound scans have been done already during the second semester of pregnancy to determine the growth of the fetus and its well being. The final ultrasound at 36 weeks of pregnancy is done to check whether the baby is in the right position for birth and whether a c section might be required. Following this the mother to be will have to go for frequent check ups to her doctor to ensure that everything is normal and that the birth will be either through the vagina or whether anything else has to be done. At 36 weeks the baby is around 5.9 pounds heavy and is 18.6 inches in length or could even be longer. The baby continues to gain weight after this stage of pregnancy. To gauge the actual time of the last ovulation and check the gestational period and ovulation ultrasound helps in giving an accurate date. Many women have a cycle which is not just four weeks and could be either more than that or less than it. This makes it difficult to decide on the time and date of conception and a scan proves to be more reliable.
