The early signs of twin pregnancies are similar to those of single baby pregnancies. But there are some unique cues that may be indicate that you are pregnant with twins. Some of the common early signs of pregnancy include a skipped menstrual cycle and morning sickness. Most women are alerted to the possibility that they may be pregnant when they notice the absence of menstruation. Some women may still experience bleeding even when they are pregnant. This is may be due to implantation of the egg into the uterine lining. Morning sickness encompasses a variety of symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache and fatigue.

It is not restricted to mornings and can occur any time during the day. Morning sickness usually begins 2 to 8 weeks after conception and is more prominent in the first trimester. Other early signs of pregnancy include darkening of the areola, breast tenderness and frequent urination.

Some of the very early symptoms of twin pregnancy are not really related to physical changes. There are some women who are more likely to have a twin pregnancy and these signs may be indicative of it. Women who undergo in-vitro fertilization are more likely to become pregnant with twins. A family history of twins can also mean that twin or multiple pregnancies may occur. Women above the age of 30 years are at a greater chance of carrying twins. This may be due to the fact that more women above 30 years seek fertility treatments such as in-vitro fertilization. Conception of twins occurs more commonly in women who have been pregnant before. Studies have also shown that African-American women are more likely to have twin pregnancies.

The very early signs during twin pregnancy development vary only slightly from a single baby pregnancy. The only difference may be the intensity or severity of the symptoms. Since there will be an increased production of hormones in twin pregnancies, the symptoms may be much more intense. Morning sickness, frequent urination, breast sensitivity and tiredness may be more emphasized in women carrying twins. Women pregnant with twins may also gain weight very quickly, especially during the first trimester. The best way to know if you are carrying twins is to have a medical examination. About 12 weeks into the pregnancy, you are likely to hear a double heart beat if conception of twins has taken place.
