MRSA Exposure During Pregnancy

MRSA stands for meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This bacteria thrives on the surface of your skin and inside your nose. People can carry the MRSA infection for a period of time and not even be aware of it. These carriers do not have any symptoms as the bacterium does not cause any harm. MRSA is a bacterium that is resistant to many antibiotics.

Let us now understand MRSA exposure during pregnancy. Firstly if the mother is a carrier of MRSA bacteria but does not have an infection, then there is no harm to the baby in her womb. However, if the mother gets infected during the course of her pregnancy, the child could also be at risk.


Especially if the woman has a vaginal birth, there might be a chance that the baby could acquire the infection. However, this is not necessary. There is no evidence to show that carrying MRSA during pregnancy can harm the unborn baby or lead to miscarriage. In order to avoid MRSA exposure during pregnancy it is essential that pregnant women avoid contact with those infected with MRSA.

The following steps should be kept in mind to limit exposure to MRSA during pregnancy.

  1. If the pregnant woman has to wash clothes or bed clothes used by an MRSA infected person, she should wear gloves. It would be better to let someone else do this task for her, if possible.
  2. No towels, soap, or any toiletries, or even a razor should be shared with someone who has an MRSA infection.
  3. If the pregnant woman comes in contact with such a person, she should immediately wash her hands with soap and water.
  4. It is not advisable for a pregnant woman to touch the sores or wounds of any person who has a MRSA skin infection.

If however, there is MRSA exposure during pregnancy, it can be treated. Consult the doctor before taking any over the counter medication treat MRSA during pregnancy.
