Do infant growth spurts hurt?

Infant growth spurts are expected during the early months of a baby's life. Baby growth spurts are noticeable when the sleep and feeding pattern changes. Feed timings, as well as, the amount of feed changes with the sudden growth of the infant. This means that they require frequent feeds of larger amounts and the baby seems to get hungry faster.

The infant growth spurt chart predicts the future growth rate of the baby.. It records your baby's age, height and weight, making it easier for the pediatrician to monitor growth. Most parents like to have a growth rate chart for their baby so that they can observe if their child's growth is normal, or stunted in any way. Most nursing mothers worry about the milk being sufficient for their child, and whether or not they should put them on a supplement feed. If the weight and height is not increasing according to the chart, then the feed might be insufficient. Not only should the weight and height increase, but even the circumference of the child's head must grow. However, after the child is six months old, it is best to wean it off mother's milk and start on supplement feeds. A normal baby should weigh thrice its birth weight at one year, and be 50% more in height. The circumference of the head should also be a third more in size.

The Infant growth spurts sleeping pattern changes considerably, and the child wakes up more often in the middle of the night craving for feeds. The first growth spurt is usually within the first ten days, and this is also when the first erratic sleep pattern can be observed. . After this, there is a spurt every three months until the age of nine months. However, some children sleep through it all.  In such cases, as long as your child grows and feels hungrier, there is no need for alarm. A mother who is nursing her baby should ensure that her own food intake is sufficient and well balanced.

At three months, your little one starts giggling at your silly mimes and inflectional jabber. You stare at him angrily–he smiles, you sneer at him coldly–he smiles. Twiddling your fingers and making gurgling sounds, he makes you laugh and keeps you occupied. It is at this stage, that he also experiences another growth spurt. You are to endure sleepless nights and make the most of the little free time you get, to snooze dreamily and eat hastily. Eat as much, as your body requires the strength.
