The HCG or Human chorionic gonadotropin is the hormone that is produced in the body of a woman when she is pregnant. Hence some doctors may try and establish a link between miscarriage and hcg levels to determine whether the women is still pregnant or a spontaneous abortion has occurred. Many doctors may also ask the pregnant woman to go in for a routine hCG levels test as part of the routine prenatal care. Some other doctors may also require the pregnant woman to go in for a urine based hCG test to confirm the pregnancy especially if the woman is experiencing vaginal bleeding or other such signs of miscarriage.

The hCG test result will help the doctor to ascertain whether the pregnancy is progressing smoothly as it should or there are certain complications that need to be addressed on an urgent basis. Usually, a drop in the hCG levels in the first trimester itself may be an indication of an impending miscarriage. Similarly a slow rise in the hCG levels that do not almost double every three days in the early stages of pregnancy may also be a sign on a problem in the pregnancy whereas in some cases it may even indicate a normal pregnancy depending on the health conditions of the mother and other factors.


Some of the miscarriage causes are chromosomal abnormalities which could be on account of extra chromosomes or even missing genes which act as a hindrance and even a stoppage in the development of the baby eventually resulting in a miscarriage. Some other causes of a miscarriage that are commonly observed are constant drug and alcohol abuse during pregnancy, smoking, placental abruption etc. Many a times women also experience other signs of miscarriage such as heavy bleeding, abdominal cramping which may be very severe or relatively mild, blood clots, nausea and vomiting. Research has shown that almost 20 to 30 % of miscarriages end in miscarriages or spontaneous abortions before pregnancy week 12. Many a times a miscarriage may occur when the woman does not even know she was pregnant. These kind of miscarriages are usually observe in the initial three week so the pregnancy and one of these miscarriage causes is the lack of an embryo for implantation.

Contrary to what most people believe, a miscarriage is not caused because of exercising or engaging in sexual intercourse or by working. However in case of women who have had miscarriage sin the past, their doctor may require them to refrain from such activities.
