Baby Feeding Frequency

Submitted by Pregnancy and Baby Care team on January 16, 2012

Nutrition is the most important factor in a growing baby's life. Nutrition is responsible for the physical and mental growth of a child and allows the child's body to become strong and resist infections and illnesses. A lack of nutrition at this crucial stage is likely to cause lifelong deficiencies. New born babies are fed by their mother's breast milk and this is the primary source of nutrition for a newborn baby. Baby feeding frequency is very important as nutrition in the first few months play a crucial role in the child's growth and development.

Mother's milk is ideal because it is relatively easy to digest for a child and is easily available to the child without the child having to wait for any food to be prepared. Infants are instinctive creatures and have not yet developed their cognitive skills. This means that they will cry or show some other signs when they are hungry. It is therefore important for a baby to be attended to at all times, particularly in the beginning few months of life.

The baby feeding frequency depends on the hunger of the baby, represented through crying, and the instinct of the mother. Babies can feed up to 12 times a day without any problem. Baby formula takes longer to digest so feeding formula may be done less often. The baby feeding frequency also helps the mother's breasts remain pain free. This is because the milk production and secretion takes place continuously throughout the day and the breasts are not used to store too much milk. Another important tip regarding baby feeding frequency is related to the new born baby. New born babies should not go more than a few hours without food. This will prevent any acid buildup in their undeveloped digestive system. The baby will need to be fed at night as well and may wake up crying in order to communicate its need for feeding.

As the baby grows older, the baby feeding frequency will reduce. This may reduce in the second month to between 6 and 10 times a day and in the 3rd month between 4 and 7 times a day. Again, these figures are all based on averages; it really depends on the mother and the child's ability to communicate hunger. There are no strict rules when it comes to baby feeding frequency. Normal signs that can be interpreted to show hunger or fullness should be understood by the parents and feeding should be moderated accordingly. If the child's feeding habits are inconsistent or if any doubts exist, one should consult a child care specialist for advice.
