Toddler vomiting. Any suggestions?

(February 18, 2010)

Vomiting is not always bad but sometimes is essential as this is a way that the body gets rid of some harmful or toxic substances that it has consumed. Therefore, if your toddler vomits once and is completely normal after that then there is nothing to worry. On the other hand, if your child is constantly throwing up and unable to keep any solid food or fluids in the body it can be a reason for concern. Vomiting can be dangerous as it directly results in dehydration which can lead to a serious condition. Hence, any doctor will always recommend that you keep your child well hydrated during the course of vomiting. Vomiting can be due to a stomach infection likely caused by a viral or bacterial infection affecting the stomach line or intestines. Another cause could be congestion or a respiratory infection such as cold and sometimes in rare cases it could be an indicator for serious illnesses like pneumonia or meningitis.

Oral electrolyte solutions are the best option to prevent your child from getting dehydrated. Feed them spoonfuls of this solution to check if they can tolerate it and the quantity can be increased by seeing their reaction to these fluids. You can also give them ice pops or slush made either of the electrolyte solution. Avoid giving them any carbonated drinks as they do not help settling the stomach in any way. It is essential that your toddler stops vomiting as forcing him to drink or eat during this condition will not help. Only once their stomach eases out and the appetite returns can you start giving them food. Toddlers who eat solid food can be fed with a mixture of carrot and banana. You can give a toddler mashed potatoes, toast and crackers to eat as well. You can give your toddler’s tummy a friendly treat by brewing some warm tea like ginger, peppermint or chamomile in order to prevent scalding. If your child is showing severe signs of dehydration like sunken eyes, dizziness, excessive sleepiness, cold, fuzziness or splotchy hands and feet you need to rush to the doctor immediately. Also, you need to see the doctor if they have a breathing problem or the vomit contains blood or bile which is a green substance or if they vomit more than once after suffering from a head injury. Do not give your toddler any medication unless prescribed by the doctor.
