Yeast infection

Yeast is a type of fungus that is present in people of all ages and gender.

Yeast is present in the human body, especially on the skin, in the oral cavity, digestive system, and in the vagina in women. Yeast flourishes in wet and moist areas of the body.

Thus, in toddlers, the diaper area is where yeast flourishes. Yeast growth is quick in the diaper area because it is most often warm and moist. Children become susceptible to yeast infection, when they are taking certain antibiotic medicines or if they are still being nursed and their mother is administered with antibiotics. This happens because antibiotic medicines are known to destroy the productive bacteria in the body. The latter can control the growth of yeast. If your child has been diagnosed with a yeast infection in the mouth, then he might be more susceptible to getting an infection in the genital area.

Treatment for Toddler Yeast Infection

A toddler yeast infection can be easily treated with an anti-fungal cream that can be applied on the infected area of the skin.

However, if your toddler has an oral yeast infection, then the doctor might prescribe certain medicines as the cream cannot be applied internally. If the infection persists, then contact your pediatrician.

Prevention for Yeast Infection in Toddlers

Here are a few tips to help you minimize the chances of toddler yeast infection. However, no method is full proof and if your child is on antibiotics then he is at a greater risk of developing a yeast infection.

  • Make sure that you keep the diaper area dry and clean.
  • If your child has soiled his diaper, then you should change it immediately. Remember to clean the toddler's bottom and genital area thoroughly
  • The diaper should be placed in such a way that the air circulation isn't cut off totally.
  • Use a topical anti-fungal cream on the infected area to treat toddler yeast infections. The cream should soothe the child's skin.
  • You should be able to distinguish between a diaper rash and yeast infection.
