34 weeks pregnant

Pregnancy Week 34

You will start feeling a little uncomfortable by the time you are 34 weeks pregnant. This could be due to the fact that your uterus is about 5-6 inches away from the top of your belly button. The growing uterus pushes and moves against the other organs in your abdominal cavity. It also presses on your diaphragm which makes it difficult to breathe at times as your lungs cannot expand to their full capacity. Try putting extra pillows under your belly while sleeping – this might help with the breathlessness. Do contact your doctor if you find the breathlessness increasing or if you suffer from asthma. By 34 weeks pregnant, you and the baby should start gaining sufficient weight. Your baby should be kicking and moving around quite often by now. This could give rise to acidity and heartburn. Cut down on the regular three meals and have about seven small snacks a day to combat this.

You might also notice that your hands, face, feet and ankles are starting to swell. This is due to oedema or water retention. An increase in your water intake helps to deal with this. Excessive swelling accompanied with faintness or dizziness could be a sign of pre-eclampsia. This is a serious disease and you should inform your doctor immediately.

When you are 34 weeks pregnant, your baby will weigh about 5 pounds. He/she looks like a tiny person now.  Your baby might also “drop” or move into the birth canal anytime after 34 weeks pregnant as it is getting ready to enter the world.
