Toddler Care
Toddlers need constant attention and there are several things that parents must keep in mind when caring for one. Toddlers are very curious about their surroundings and hence an important aspect of toddler care is to childproof the home. This involves keeping sharp objects away from the toddler’s reach, covering electrical outlets with plastic protectors, shielding sharp corners with foam bumpers and fixing safety latches on cabinets. It is also important to ensure that the child stays away from the stove and hot utensils and you can install baby gates to prevent the toddler from climbing up or down staircases. Also if you have a pool or any other water body near the home, be sure that the child doesn’t venture near it. If you need to travel with the toddler, then it is very important to have a well fitted car seat and that the straps are properly secured around the child. Toddlers usually sleep in a crib or a small bed. It is better to avoid using a regular sized bed as they tend to roll a lot while they sleep. Bed rails can be used to prevent them from rolling off the bed.
Toddlers tend to wander off since they love learning new things, and so vigilance is a must. Playing with children of this age can be a real joy. There are many things you can do with them to keep them occupied and stimulate their minds. Reading to them, coloring with them, solving puzzles, or playing with new toys are activities that they enjoy a great deal. It is recommended that children below the age of two must not be allowed to watch television. Toddlers can be fussy eaters and this is one of the biggest concerns faced in toddler childcare. The first thing you need to know is whether the child has any allergies. Allergies commonly occur due to peanuts, eggs and milk. Foods that the child may easily choke on such as popcorn or grapes should also be avoided. Also refrain from giving the child too many sugary drinks and juices as this could reduce his appetite. Potty training is also something that is usually taught at this stage. This would mean that you ask the child constantly if he needs to use the bathroom. If accidents do occur one needs to be patient and keep a supply of clean clothes handy.
Toddler daycare becomes a requirement for some parents who are unable to spend much time at home due to work reasons. The disadvantage of this is that the child doesn’t get individual care and constant attention. But on the brighter side, the child’s interaction with other children increases and he will also be exposed to many new activities and skills.
