The thick mucus like discharge during pregnancy consists of secretions from the vagina, wall cells of the vagina, cervical secretions and the bacterial flora which is present in the vagina. Given below are some of the causes for thick mucus discharge during pregnancy:

  • A surge in the generation of hormones in the body, especially estrogen
  • A rise in the blood flow to the lower abdominal region and to the vaginal area
  • The process of implantation, after which the cervical secretion forms a protective barrier or a mucus plug to keep the safe

Leucorrhea can occur throughout the course of pregnancy. The presence of thick mucus discharge during late pregnancy is an indication that your body is preparing to give birth.

While it could be considered as a sign of labor, in some women the discharge is seen several days or even weeks before they are actually ready to give birth. If you notice bleeding along with the mucus discharge after the 37th week of pregnancy, it is referred to as the “blood show”, which is a definite sign of labor.

In most normal instances women notice an odorless, thick clear mucus discharge during pregnancy. Sometimes it is possible that the discharge could have a whitish tinge, or it could appear milky-white in color. It is also normal for the mucus to be accompanied by slight spotting or streaks of brownish blood because of the process of implantation.

If there are any changes to the color or texture of the discharge even as the pregnancy progresses, you may have a reason to be concerned. If you happen to notice a thick yellow mucus discharge during pregnancy, you need to let your doctor know about it, as this is a symptom of an infection, which could lead to major complications or even a miscarriage, if left untreated. In such cases, the discharge usually has a foul odor and resembles cottage cheese.

Even though a thick mucus discharge during pregnancy is quite normal, you need to keep your doctor informed about it. Your health care provider may check for other symptoms, to make sure that there is no threat to the baby. You may also be asked to go through a physical checkup right away.
